LAN Cables

LAN Cables

We've all heard of LAN cables, which allow us to connect our devices directly to a modem without using Wi-Fi. LAN stands for Local Area Network, and when referring to these types of cables within a home or office, they are also called Ethernet cables.

While it's incorrect to generalize, it's even more so to say that all LAN cables are the same; it always depends on the purpose for which they are purchased and thus used.

It seems obvious, but it's not enough to talk about connecting devices; one must know the distance to be covered and the exact number of devices to be connected to a network via a LAN cable.

As we were saying, LAN cables are not all the same. They differ by category, by the environment in which they must be placed (outdoor or indoor), whether they are shielded or not, and are further divided into FTP or UTP (different types of shielding for the wires inside the cable jacket, and thus different resistance to interference).

Each type of LAN cable is assigned a category based on two general indicators (electrical properties and insulation type) and other specific parameters. Each category is indicated by a number and a letter or by two numbers; each element indicates the type of cable one is dealing with and any improvements that have been made in the respective category.

While LAN cables once supported frequencies up to 200 MHz, today even the most economical ones support significantly better connections, and as quality and price increase, they can reach up to 1000 MHz, with covered distances up to 400 meters, useful for installations within business structures.

All our cables are tested using the Fluke DSX-8000 instrument, which allows for the verification and certification of copper transmission channels from category 3 to 8 (in particular, in the case of patch cords, they are verified using the "Component" test).
