USB printer cable: the square connector is called Type-B

The cable that connects a printer or scanner to the computer is not the same as your phone cable. It has a flat USB Type-A connector on the PC side and a USB Type-B connector on the printer side: the square one with the beveled top edge, which you can recognize at a glance. It is a standard that has remained unchanged for years precisely because it is robust: you can still find it on multifunction printers, laser printers, scanners, and many professional peripherals.

In most cases, you end up here for two reasons: the printer was sold without a cable — which happens very often — or the one included is too short for the position where the printer is actually placed.

There is a physical limit to the length

The USB 2.0 standard specifies a maximum length of about 5 meters for a passive cable. This is not a commercial recommendation: beyond that distance, signal propagation times fall outside the specifications and the connection becomes unstable, causing the printer to disappear and reappear or freeze in the middle of a print job. If you need more than that, the solution is not a longer cable but an active USB extender or, much more simply, connecting the printer to the network.

Expert advice. When a printer is "not recognized," before reinstalling drivers and going crazy, it is worth trying three things in this order: change the USB port on the computer, avoid non-powered hubs (printers draw more power than a passive hub can provide), and replace the cable, especially if it is a ten-year-old one pulled from a drawer. A USB Type-B cable that has undergone repeated pulling and bending often fails at the contacts before breaking visibly: it works intermittently, and it is the most underestimated cause of printing problems.

Frequently asked questions about the USB printer cable

Is it suitable for any printer?

For all those with a USB Type-B port, which are the vast majority of printers, multifunction units, and desktop scanners. Some compact and portable printers use micro-USB or USB-C instead: check the port on the back of the device before ordering.

Is USB 2.0 enough or is a faster version needed?

It is more than enough for printing: the data flow to a printer is modest compared to the available bandwidth. A faster cable does not reduce print times, which depend on the mechanics and processing of the printer, not the connection.

Can I use a USB extension cable to reach further?

Passive extension cables add their length to the existing cable, pushing the connection out of specification. If you cannot stay within five meters total, an active extender or network connection for the printer is better.

Does the printer work even without a cable, via WiFi?

If the model supports it, yes, but a wired connection remains the most reliable and is still needed for the initial setup of many printers. In an office, it is also the solution least affected by wireless network congestion.
