Electrical supplies for home and office: sockets, adapters, extension cords, and detectors
This is the section for those everyday items you only buy when a problem arises: you don't have enough sockets, the plug won't fit, the cable doesn't reach, or you need a detector because you have a boiler or a gas hob in your home. These are simple products, but there are two points where you shouldn't improvise: the power they can handle and the certifications.
Selection table
| Problem | Solution | Checklist |
|---|---|---|
| Need more sockets in one spot | Power strip with 3, 4, 5, or 6 outlets and a switch | 10A or 16A plug, dual-standard or universal sockets |
| The large plug doesn't fit in the small socket | 10A/16A dual-standard adapter or reducer | Power limit, generally 1500W |
| Furniture is too close to the wall | Space-saving angled Schuko adapter or slim power strip with angled plug | Direction of the angle relative to the socket |
| Cable doesn't reach: garden, worksite, garage | Retractable extension cord, 5 to 25 meters, with dual or universal sockets | Actual length, plug current rating |
| Socket needed outdoors or in a humid environment | Outdoor power strip IP44 | IP44 protects against splashes, not immersion |
| Appliance bought abroad or travel outside Europe | Travel adapter for USA, UK, China, Australia | The adapter changes the plug, not the voltage |
| Boiler, heater, or gas hob in the house | Detectors for carbon monoxide, natural gas, smoke, water leaks | Reference standard and sensor expiration date |
Dual-standard vs. universal sockets: what's the difference
A dual-standard socket accepts both 10A and 16A Italian plugs because it has holes for both distances. A universal socket (also called "trivalente") adds the ability to accept Schuko plugs, the German plugs with round poles and side grounding contacts. If you have notebook power supplies, appliances, or devices imported from Northern Europe, a universal socket saves you from needing a collection of adapters.
Detectors: check the standard, not the price
For these products, certification is what matters. Carbon monoxide detectors must comply with EN 50291, and smoke detectors with EN 14604: these are the standards that qualify the sensitivity and reliability of the alarm. Also remember that sensors have a limited useful life, usually a few years, which is indicated on the device. Once that date has passed, the device must be replaced, even if the indicator light continues to flash normally. An expired detector is dangerous precisely because it gives the impression of providing protection.
Carbon monoxide is lighter than air and must be detected at breathing height or slightly above; methane accumulates high up, and LPG settles at the bottom. The position of the detector is important. You can find the full range in the detectors section.
Expert advice. Three things we see people do wrong all the time. First: do not plug one power strip into another; this adds the load onto a single wall socket that is not sized to handle it. Second: retractable extension cords must be completely unrolled when powering heavy loads like heaters, cement mixers, or pressure washers—the cable coiled on the drum acts like a coil and heats up, potentially melting the insulation. Third: the 1500W limit on adapters is a real limit, not a rough estimate: an oven, a professional hairdryer, or a space heater will exceed it on their own.
Frequently asked questions
How many appliances can I plug into a power strip?
It's not the number of sockets that matters, but the sum of the watts consumed, which must remain below the limit of the power strip and the wall outlet. Six phone chargers are not a problem; a heater and an oven together are, even on a six-outlet strip.
Does a travel adapter also convert voltage?
No, it only adapts the shape of the plug. If the appliance is not designed for the voltage of the destination country, you need a converter or transformer. However, almost all modern power supplies accept 100–240V: check the label before you leave.
What does IP44 mean on an outdoor power strip?
Protection against solid objects larger than one millimeter and against water splashes from any direction. It is suitable for a terrace or a sheltered garden, but not for immersion or direct exposure to water jets.
Where should a carbon monoxide detector be installed?
In the same room as the combustion appliance, a few meters away from it, at breathing height or slightly above. Avoid dead corners, proximity to windows and air vents, and placement directly above the flame.
How often should a detector be replaced?
Follow the date indicated by the manufacturer on the device: electrochemical sensors wear out over time regardless of whether they have ever been triggered. Periodic testing checks the siren and the power supply, not the state of the sensor itself.
