The definitive guide to choosing your halogen lamp: find the perfect compatible replacement

Replacing a halogen lamp today means finding the exact replacement so you don't have to change the entire lighting fixture. Whether you're looking for a solution for an old dimmer or a recessed spotlight, here's how to identify the correct model.

Quick Decision Table

Where do you need to install it? Most probable base Voltage What to check before purchase
Floor lamps or outdoor spotlights R7s (linear) 230V Exact length measurement: 78mm or 118mm.
Recessed spotlights / Bathroom / Hoods G4 / GY6.35 12V Require a transformer. Check the space in the spotlight.
Small wall lights or modern chandeliers G9 (capsule) 230V Connect directly to the mains, be careful not to touch the glass.
Classic chandeliers or bedside lamps E27 (large) / E14 (small) 230V Easily replaceable with Classic LED lamps or LED Filament.

⚠️ The fatal error that burns out the bulb in 5 minutes

Never touch the glass bulb of a halogen lamp with bare hands! This applies especially to G9, G4, and R7s models. The natural grease from your skin deposits on the quartz and creates a localized hot spot that causes the glass to blacken or explode, instantly burning out the filament. Always use a glove or clean cloth during installation.

Technical Specifications Explained Simply

  • The Base: This is the base of the light bulb. There are screw-in (E27, E14) or "pin" (G9, G4, GY6.35) types. Look at the pins: if they are 9 millimeters apart, it's a G9. If they are 4 millimeters apart, it's a G4. R7s are tubular and clip into spring-loaded holders at both ends.
  • Voltage (12V vs 230V): 230V bulbs connect directly to household current. 12V bulbs only work with a transformer. If you connect a 12V bulb directly to 230V, it will explode; if you put a 230V bulb in a 12V system, it won't light up.
  • Dimmability: All halogen lamps are 100% dimmable with old rotary dimmers. This makes them irreplaceable for many older systems where LEDs cause flickering.
  • Availability and Ecodesign Regulation: According to Regulation (EU) 2019/2020, the production of many halogens has ceased. The products you find in our main category Halogen lamps or among the Products on offer are "end-of-series" stock. Our expert advice? If you have a chandelier you love that only works with these bulbs, stock up now before they disappear permanently from the market.

Pre-purchase Checklist ✅

  • Have you checked the base? Check the code or measure the contacts.
  • Have you measured the length (for R7s)? It must be exactly 78mm or 118mm.
  • Have you verified the maximum wattage? Never exceed the Watts (W) indicated on the light fixture's label to avoid overheating.

Pre-purchase FAQs

The fitting is usually printed on the bulb's neck or on the ceramic base. E27 and E14 are screw-in (27mm and 14mm in diameter, respectively). G9 has two flat metal loops, while G4 and GY6.35 have two thin pin connectors. R7s is the classic "pencil" with contacts at the ends.
The measurement should be taken from one end to the other of the lamp's metal contacts. If you don't have the old bulb, measure the space between the two terminals of the lamp holder. Do not attempt to fit a 118mm bulb into a 78mm housing: these are incompatible standards.
It's possible, but you need to buy an LED explicitly labeled "dimmable." Old halogen dimmers often require a minimum load (e.g., 20-40W) that a single LED bulb (often 5-8W) cannot meet, causing flickering or buzzing.
12V lamps always require a transformer. Ferromagnetic transformers (heavy and bulky) are more resistant but less efficient; electronic ones are compact but require the lamp's wattage to be within the operating range indicated on the device itself.
The grease left by your fingers creates a localized hot spot on the quartz glass. This thermal imbalance leads to devitrification or rapid bulb failure. If you accidentally touch it, clean it with alcohol before turning it on.
This means that European production has ceased to comply with energy efficiency parameters. Products are available while stocks last. If you have a system that absolutely requires halogens, we recommend stocking up now in our [Special Offers / Outlet] section.
