Thorgeon: replacement halogens, including the power ratings you can't find
Thorgeon is a range dedicated to halogen lamps, particularly those formats and power ratings that the market has stopped carrying. Tubular E14s for high-power heaters and radiators, PAR30 and PAR38 for commercial track lighting, long R7s for floodlights, and spherical and candle bulbs for dimmable decorative fixtures. These are spare parts for appliances that still work and make no sense to replace.
Format table
| Format | Power ratings in range | Where used |
|---|---|---|
| E14 tubular | 105W (1800 lm), 130W dimmable (2400 lm), 175W (3300 lm) | Floor lamps, high-output fixtures, heaters |
| E14 spherical and candle | 18W and 28W, dimmable | Wall lamps, chandeliers, decorative lamps |
| E27 standard and spherical | 28W and 42W (55W output), dimmable | Pendant lamps, ceiling lights, floor lamps |
| PAR30 and PAR38 | 100W, 30° beam, 230V, dimmable versions | Tracks and spotlights for shops, showrooms, windows |
| R7s linear | 1000W, length 189 mm | High-power floodlights, construction and set lighting |
Why they remain irreplaceable in certain cases
For many appliances, halogen is not a nostalgic choice, but the only one that works. Older dimmable systems have controllers designed for resistive loads: a low-draw LED often fails to reach the minimum load and will flicker or not turn on at all. In high-power floodlights, the 1000W R7s produces an output that few LED fixtures can replicate in the same housing. And in some applications, the heat component is part of the function, not a waste.
Expert advice. On R7s bulbs, measure the length before ordering: 78, 117, 118, and 189 mm are different and non-interchangeable formats. The 189 mm 1000W version in particular is a professional floodlight bulb, not a spare for home floor lamps. Also, pay attention to a detail that ruins halogen bulbs in a few hours: do not touch the glass with bare hands. Skin oils create a hot spot that causes the bulb to fail prematurely. Use a clean cloth or gloves, and if you have already touched it, clean it with alcohol before turning it on.
Frequently asked questions
Can halogen lamps still be purchased?
Yes, as discontinued lines and while stocks last. The European Union's ecodesign framework has progressively withdrawn various types of lamps from the market, but the sale of existing stock remains permitted: they remain legitimate replacements for appliances currently in use.
What does "low consumption" mean on a halogen bulb?
It means it is fitted with a more efficient halogen gas bulb and produces the same luminous flux while consuming less than a traditional halogen. They remain much less efficient than LEDs: the advantage is compatibility with the appliance, not energy savings.
What is the difference between PAR30 and PAR38?
The diameter of the reflector, expressed in eighths of an inch: the PAR30 measures approximately 95 mm, the PAR38 approximately 122 mm. The dimensions and beam output vary, so they must be checked against the spotlight fixture you have already installed.
Can I replace them with equivalent LEDs?
On direct mains connections, often yes, by verifying the dimensions and compatibility with any dimmer. For older regulated circuits and power floodlights, the replacement must be tested: it often happens that the required minimum load is not reached.
What does "55W output" mean on a 42W lamp?
That it consumes 42W while producing the luminous flux of an old 55W incandescent bulb. This is the equivalence to use for replacing the lamp without changing the feel of the light in the room.
