Installation material: compatibility with wiring accessory series comes first
This section contains everything you need to complete a system: keystone jacks for network, fiber, HDMI, and USB, adapters for the main Italian wiring accessory series, photovoltaic connectors, power connectors, and terminal blocks. The selection criterion is always the same and must be verified before ordering: the jack must fit into the support and wall plate you already have installed.
The keystone system in a nutshell
The keystone is a standardized module: a housing that holds an RJ45 jack, optical adapter, HDMI connector, or USB port, which snaps into a support. The advantage is that you separate the function from the frame: if you want to turn a telephone jack into a network jack tomorrow, you change the module and not the wall plate. What must match is the adapter that carries the keystone into your wiring accessory series.
Compatibility table
| If you have installed | You need |
|---|---|
| Vimar Plana, Arke, Idea | Keystone adapter for the corresponding series, in the color of the plate |
| Bticino Matix, Light, Luna | Keystone adapter dedicated to the series: frames are not interchangeable with each other |
| Legrand Vela | Vela-specific keystone adapter |
| No wiring accessory series, surface mounting | Standalone keystone box or panel |
Which module to install
Category 5e, 6, or 6a RJ45, shielded or unshielded, for network jacks: the jack category must be at least equal to that of the cable, otherwise the jack is the bottleneck.
Optical adapters to route fiber to the wall in an orderly manner.
HDMI modules with a pass-through connector for wall-mounted audio-video connections.
USB modules, both as pass-through data jacks and as charging points.
Pro tip. Two points that cause more order errors than any other. First: if you have chosen shielded cable, get shielded jacks, otherwise the braid remains disconnected and the shielding is useless — you spent more for nothing. Second: take a photo of the existing wall plate and jack before ordering. Vimar Plana and Vimar Arke look alike but the frames are different, and the same goes for Bticino Matix and Light. With a photo, we can solve in a minute what is constantly mistaken by eye.
Photovoltaic connectors and terminal blocks
In this section, you will also find photovoltaic connectors for DC string wiring, flying and panel-mount power connectors, and twist-on wire connectors for junction boxes. A non-negotiable rule applies to photovoltaics: connectors of the same series on both ends. Mating different brands just because "they fit" generates contact resistance and becomes a hot spot over the years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the keystone a universal standard?
The module is, the adapter is not. The keystone jack has standardized dimensions, but the part that holds it inside the wall plate changes from one wiring series to another. That is where compatibility verification is critical.
Can I put a Cat. 6 jack on a Cat. 5e cable?
Yes, it works: the link's performance will be that of the cable, which is the weakest link. The opposite — Cat. 5e jack on Cat. 6 cable — is a waste, as it limits the connection to the lower category.
How do you terminate a keystone jack?
With a punch-down tool, which pushes the conductor into the insulation-displacement contact and cuts the excess in one go. Follow the color scheme indicated on the jack (T568A or T568B) and use the same scheme at both ends of the cable.
How much should I untwist the pairs?
As little as possible: the twisting of the pairs should be maintained right up to the contact. On higher categories, a few centimeters of open pairs is enough to drop performance below certification levels.
Do you also have the cables to match?
Yes, in the bulk cable sections for fixed wiring, patch cables for ready-to-use connections, and RJ45 plugs for field terminations.
