Devalan: connectors for photovoltaic wiring
Devalan covers two specific needs in direct current wiring: MC4-compatible connectors for connecting panel strings, and 40A blue connectors for the battery cables of Solax inverters. These are small parts, but in photovoltaics, they are where faults tend to concentrate: it is almost never the cable that fails, it is the connections.
What is needed where
| Connection | Connector | Specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Panel → panel, string → inverter | MC4-compatible male and female, for crimping | 1100V, 35A, for 4 mm² cable |
| Storage battery → Solax inverter | Blue male and female connector, also available in pairs | 40A, for 4 to 6 mm cables |
Connectors are always ordered in pairs: each connection has a male and a female half, and the positive and negative are two separate circuits. Count how many terminations you actually need before ordering.
There is only one rule for MC4 connectors
Use connectors from the same series on both ends. Industry standards and manufacturers explicitly advise against mating connectors from different brands, even when they appear mechanically compatible: tolerances, contact materials, and seals are designed to mate with their own counterpart. A mixed connection generates contact resistance, which means heat, and over time it becomes a point of failure or worse.
This also applies to the tool: crimping must be done with the correct pliers for the contact and cross-section. An approximate crimp on a circuit operating in direct current at high voltage is not just a cosmetic flaw.
Expert advice. Photovoltaic strings are live whenever there is light: they cannot be "switched off" like a household circuit, and there is no switch that makes them safe on the panel side. Any work on the DC side must be performed by a qualified installer, using the required protective equipment. For Solax battery connectors, verify that the model corresponds exactly to your inverter before ordering: series change, and an almost correct connector is not correct.
Frequently asked questions
Does "MC4 compatible" mean it mates with the originals?
It means it meets the same dimensional standard. The correct practice remains using connectors of the same series and manufacturer on both sides of the connection: mating between different brands is discouraged by manufacturers and industry standards.
What kind of pliers are needed to crimp them?
Specific pliers for photovoltaic contacts, with dies corresponding to the cable cross-section. Generic pliers deform the contact without ensuring the required mechanical and electrical integrity.
Are they suitable for 6 mm² cable?
The MC4-compatible connectors in our range are indicated for 4 mm² cable. For 6 mm², the corresponding cross-section contact is required: always check the individual product sheet before ordering.
What does 1100V mean?
It is the maximum allowable operating voltage in direct current. Photovoltaic strings sum the voltages of the panels in series and can easily exceed domestic values: this is why connectors are rated for very high voltages.
Are they suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, they are designed to remain on the roof for years. However, weatherproofing depends on the assembly: cable gland tightened on the sheath, cable of the correct diameter, and connector fully closed. Always secure the cables to the structure with UV-resistant cable ties.
