Optical cabling, a small handbook with all the terms you need to know

Cablaggi ottici, un piccolo vademecum con tutti i termini da conoscere

The keywords are reliability, speed and high quality when it comes to data transmission. Optical cabling is data transmission systems that are based on optical fiber instead of copper cables and today they are present in our homes, and beyond, in multiple applications. One for all? Modern internet lines that allow us to surf at speeds we once only imagined.

Data transmission through optical cabling is fast, even over long distances and, unlike old transmission cables, the amount of data that can be transported is significantly greater.

Before delving into the world of optical cabling, a small handbook to find out which are the fundamental words to know.

1) Optical fibre: to be transmitted, optical signals pass through a thin and transparent glass thread, the optical fibre.

2) Connector: used to connect two ends of optical fiber.

3) Sheath: it is the coating that protects the optical fiber from damage.

4) Attenuation: consists of the loss of signal power when it passes through the optical fiber.

5) Dispersion: this is the phenomenon whereby the signal widens and there may be problems during the passage of data.

6) Fusion joint: it is the welding that is made between two optical fibers in such a way that the signal passes through continuously and permanently.

7) Light source: it is the light source that is used to create the optical signals which are then passed through the fiber.

8) Power meter: used to measure the signal power inside an optical fiber.
